Other than new a vocalist on a few tracks, the differences are minor. I would instead have preferred reinterpreted versions then straight copies. My thoughts on Regeneration are that it is interesting but not necessary. The standout is the medley how could you leave that off the CD, some great tracks in the medley that don’t usually see the light of day. After listening to the CD I was not overly impressed, but the video is much better. I find myself struggling to hear it in the mix.

Styx with The Contemporary Youth Orchestra – One With EverythingĪn enjoyable live album because of the Orchestra, but the songs don’t take full advantage of the Orchestra for the most part. Don't think I can do the live GI/PoE set - heard these too many times recently! Although I watched it on youtube a couple months ago (since I only have the cd set) and quite enjoyed it. The worst bit is how instead of singing "Care-y on" he mutilates it into "Kah-ree on" - sounds ridiculous! I checked a couple live versions on youtube and he didn't even do it there, so why muck up this studio re-recording?Īnyway, that's my take. The only real disaster for me is Gowan's Come Sail Away which still comes off bloated, like a live version (note: I get bored with hearing "come sail away" over and over again in a live show - it doesn't need to be 10 minutes long!). Fooling Yourself, Sing For The Day, Crystal Ball, Boat on the River, Snowblind: they all come off pretty good. Never would've thought he could carry that one off, until I was somewhat stunned to see him do in live after Dennis departure/firing. I also enjoy a couple variants (compared with originals), with Gowan doing Queen of Spades and JY doing Lorelei. Similarly, JY tones down the histrionics a bit for Miss America, which he hams up to such a degree live that I rarely enjoy it (though I think the original is near-perfect). What do I mean? Well, it's nice to hear an alternate version of Renegade without the tired "we've gotta go now" stuff that gets pigeonholed into live versions at the end of their shows. But I do enjoy them, because they cut out the "fat" of the live performances to a degree. Obviously a lot of these are concert staples that the guys could play in their sleep and I've heard them do most of them plenty of times. "Coming of Age" is catchy enough, but it's the kind of "stupid" rock song that I hate myself for enjoying ("I asked her her name, she said her name was Maybe" ). "High Enough" really has a killer hook would've been nice if that could've been saved for a later Styx project. But most of the remakes are respectable, and this is a nice way for me to pick up two Damn Yankees single-remakes without be having to stomach the odious Mr. Would I reach for these remakes over the originals? No. Ok, so perhaps it's just Styx burnout from listening so intently to their music over the last few months that made me “forget” this disc, but Regeneration is mostly pretty decent, I think. Perhaps I'll throw it back on and chime in later. I listened to Regeneration a couple days ago and have already mostly forgotten my impressions of it. I did also quite enjoy the "medley" I think I got some version of that at a couple of the shows I attended. I at least enjoy many of those songs, unlike lackluster (IMO) new Styx songs. So, given the opportunity of hearing the boys do songs like the above, or tackle classic rock oldies, I know my preference would definitely be for the latter. The Tommy one ("All I Want") is pleasant enough, but the Gowan one was too cloying for my tastes. I'm not a big fan of Christmas songs, either. The REO collab is ok, although it falls into the generic rocker category - pretty forgettable stuff. Maybe a couple re-writes could have made it into a song I'd fully enjoy. There are some Styx echoes in that song, but it still needs work. "Everything All The Time" is the "rock" version of that again it does nothing for me.

The ballad, "Just Be," is tepid tripe that does zilch for me. These new songs make an interesting counterpoint to the covers album we just discussed.
